Processing times for a certified copy of a birth certificate can vary. In Alabama, the general turnaround time is 7-10 days. This can be expedited by paying an additional fee.
The Alabama Center for Health Statistics may not approve a vital records request if the submitted application does not meet the requirements.
It is recommended that each applicant checks their request thoroughly to ensure all details are correct before it’s submitted for processing.
A certified copy of a birth record in Alabama costs $15. The price is still payable if the birth certificate cannot be found, and a “Certificate of Failure to Find” is issued instead.
Additional copies of a birth record are then $6 per document. They must be requested at the same time as the original application.
If you need your vital record quickly, you can expedite the process by paying an extra $15.
To request a vital record in Alabama, you must present a completed application form and an accepted form of identification.
You must have a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, passport, certificate of citizenship, or official ID card. You can find the full list of official identification documents by consulting the Alabama Center for Health Statistics.
If you do not have identification from the primary ID list, you can present 2 forms of identification from the secondary IDs list. These include: expired government-issued ID, utility bill (within 6 months), work ID, vehicle registration or title, and property tax bill.
If you are not the person named on the birth record you are requesting, you must also have a document proving you are a close relative or spouse of the named person, or a legal representative of an authorized person.
