Kansas (KS) Vital Records

An application for a copy of a birth certificate in Kansas can take up to 2 weeks to be processed. If you need your document by a certain time, please allow the maximum time for your request to be approved. 

The Office of Vital Statistics in Topeka manages and processes vital records. You can check the information on this page, or on the official website, to ensure that you have followed their procedure correctly.

Vital record requests that are made through the Office of Vital Statistics cost $20. The payment is retained even if your record is not found, to cover the cost of the search. 

There is a $20 charge for each additional copy of the same birth certificate.

Mail order payments can be a check or money order made payable to “Kansas Vital Statistics.” 

Online and phone payments are paid with a credit card, which must be in the name of the applicant. There is an additional $13.95 service fee for credit card requests.

To request a birth record in Kansas, you will need:

• Completed application form

• Photo ID

• Proof of eligibility (if applicable)

Valid Photo IDs include: 

• Driver’s license

• Military ID

• State ID card

• Passport

• Permanent residency card

If you do not have one of the documents mentioned above, you may show 2 forms of ID. You can find the full list of acceptable documents on the Kansas Department of Health and Environment website.

If you are not the person on the birth certificate you are requesting, or one of the parents, you must also show proof that you are eligible to request a copy.
