Maine became the 23rd state on March 15, 1820. It is part of the New England region of the United States. The population is 1,362,359, which was last recorded in 2020.

Maine is the 12th-smallest U.S. state by area, the 9th-least populous, and the 13th-least densely populated. It is also the most rural state in the country. 

The most populous city in Maine is Portland and its capital is Augusta. There are several counties in the state. The most important by population are: Cumberland County, York County, Penobscot County, Kennebec County, and Androscoggin County. 

Vitals records are held at Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Augusta. The state office houses birth, death, marriage, and divorce records for vital events that have occurred since 1923. Records from 1892-1922 are housed at the Maine State Archives.
