In New Jersey, you or a close family member of the person named on the record can apply for a birth certificate.
It will normally take anywhere from 4-8 weeks to process your birth certificate request.
This processing time may take added time if the application does not include the required documentation or payment.

Requesting a certified copy of a New Jersey birth record requires the payment of a fixed charge.
You will be required to pay $25 for the initial copy of a New Jersey birth certificate that you order.
If you order any additional copy of a birth certificate in your order, you will need to pay $2 for each extra copy in your request.
You can submit a check or money order that must be submitted to the New Jersey General Treasury.
To ensure the correct processing of your application, you must include a photocopy of your identification that is valid in New Jersey.
In New Jersey, you must submit just one of the following forms of primary ID:
- State driver’s license or non-driver’s license
- State driver’s license without a photo and an alternate identification
It is also possible to present 2 of the following alternative forms of identification, instead of one primary identification:
- W-2 form or tax return for the current or past tax year
- Federal or state identification
- U.S. or foreign passport
