North Dakota was made the 39th state on November 2, 1889. It is situated in the Upper Midwest of the country, bordered by the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba to the north, and by Minnesota to the east, South Dakota to the south, and Montana to the west.
The population of North Dakota is 779,094, making it the 5th lowest in the U.S. The most populated counties are Cass County, Burleigh County, Grand Forks County, Williams County, and Morton County. The largest city in the state is Fargo, while the capital is Bismarck.
The State Office that is in charge of vital records for North Dakota is the ND Department of Health, in the Division of Vital Records. The department has some birth records starting in 1870, however the years 1870 to 1920 are incomplete. Some death records go back to July 1893, but records between 1894 and 1920 are incomplete.
