The department has some birth records starting in 1870, however the years 1870 to 1920 are incomplete. Some death records go back to July 1893, but records between 1894 and 1920 are incomplete.

You can expect the process to receive an official, government-issued copy of a North Dakota birth certificate to last between 2 and 4 weeks.
By including all the required documentation, such as government or state-issued photo identification, you can avoid drawn-out processing times.
You can also save time when applying for a copy of your birth certificate by using our online Vital Records office database to find the correct office to receive your document.
You must pay a fee to receive your birth certificate in North Dakota. It’s essential to include the payment with your application or the processing time will take longer.
For the first copy of a certificate that you order, you must pay $15.
For any additional copy of a birth certificate, the fee will be an extra $15.
Personal checks or money orders must be made payable to the ND Department of Health.
To apply for an ND birth certificate, you need to also submit a valid form of identification.
You can submit a photocopy of one of the following when you apply for your certificate or your child’s certificate:
- State driver’s license or photo ID
- Bureau of Indian Affairs tribal ID card
- U.S. Military ID card
- U.S. passport or visa
- U.S. Permanent Resident Card
If you are unable to provide the previous forms of ID, you can submit any 2 of the following:
- Up-to-date utility bill (no more than 3 months old)
- Social Security Card
- Bank statement or pay stub (no more than 3 months old)
- Income tax return (from the previous year)
- Car registration (current year)
