The State of Rhode Island is in the New England region of the Northeastern United States. It was made a state on May 29, 1790. In the past, it was originally called the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, but this name was dropped in 2020.

It is the smallest state by size, covering a total area of 1,214 square miles (3,144 square kilometers). With 1,097,379 inhabitants, it is the 9th least populated, but the 2nd most densely populated.
